Some Thoughts on Iraq

I heard some people talking about the war on Iraq last night, and I feel bad because I have ultimately slipped into political apathy. Not that I do not care about the war, and at the heart of it I support it, but I was thinking I do not keep myself updated enough with it to really have an opinion about it, just a feeling. I mean even if it were true that we were going to war for oil, I would still support it. I think going to someone's country just for a resource or land or whatever is as viable a reason as some supposedly humanitarian cause. People have been doing it since we were australopitheci, and I do not see why it will stop now. Would I want to die for the cause of some resource, or some man's personal pride, no. But as far as wars go, I figure it is about as reasonable to die for those causes as anything else. Think about it, people commit suicide for what seem like to us, really small reasons, I do not think it is always up to us to know what is a good cause and what is not. But then, maybe this war will vilify us to the world, I say big deal to that, we have been villains ever since World War II, and it won't change by us dealing with things differently, or at least I am fairly sure it would not.

In my mind the only way it would change is if we started distributing our wealth or success to the rest of the world. I DO think we should pull all support from Israel and find an alternate power source, I am sure that would clear our names very much with at least the Middle East, but as long as oil is what drives our cars predominantly, I think we are screwed as far as that goes. I totally support electric hybrids, and wish I had the money to buy one, for the reasons of supporting alternate energy, but more because those get like 80 miles to the gallon, would that not be great? Ultimately, I wish we never had to fight anyone, and I feel that American causes to go to war within the past half-century have been somewhat lacking in anything outside of our personal interests, but as I said before, I feel that in many ways that is the most natural if not the most worthy cause to go to war. I do not like to think about people dying or suffering, but trying to stop wars or violence among people is about as easy as stopping a volcano from erupting, or an earthquake from happening. Maybe we should try for it, but I can nearly guarantee you it will never happen, but go ahead prove me wrong, I would like for that.
